The Tobacco and Alcohol Connection
 Research has shown that preventing or delaying the first use of alcohol and tobacco can have a tremendous effect on the likelihood that a person will move on to other drugs. This program provides research-based information without resorting to scare tactics, so that youth can make well-informed decisions about alcohol and tobacco use. It is an important step in turning around the current trend of high alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use among our youth. The use of this curriculum with students in grades six through nine is an effective way to reinforce an existing curriculum in a positive and enjoyable way appropriate for this age group.
NCADD is pleased that the We're Not Buying it Programwas selected to participate in SAMHSA's CAPT (Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies) Service to Science Academy. SAMHSA's Service to Science (STS) Initiative is a national initiative designed to enhance the evaluation capacity of innovative programs and practices that address critical substance abuse prevention or mental health needs. STS provides customized technical assistance aimed at providing participants with the education, tools and follow-up technical assistance programs needed to evaluate their efforts with increasing levels of methodological rigor.
WE’RE NOT BUYING IT is a modular program focusing on reducing early first use of alcohol, marijuana, tobacco, and prescription and over-the-counter medications. Bullying (including cyber) has its own lesson, as does an examination of media’s role in promoting each of the above. Rutgers University has been contracted to provide an independent evaluation to measure changes in knowledge, attitude, and behavior on the individual level.

- Process: Four (4) to six (6) forty-five minute sessions
- Evaluation Measures: Pre- and post-program instruments for teachers to evaluate classroom level behavior and Pre- and post-program instruments for teachers to evaluate individual level behavior
